Update the demo and Nvidia driver, change the upscaler from FSR to TSR or DLSS, then restart the game before loading the level again. If a D3D12-style crash continues, verify the demo is using the discrete Nvidia GPU.
Use this order
Update Valor Mortis
Let Steam finish the demo update. Patches 1.01–1.03 contain crash, GPU-detection, and loading fixes.
Update the Nvidia driver
Use Nvidia’s stable release for your GPU. The Valor Mortis developer specifically calls out older Nvidia drivers as a source of poor performance.
Replace FSR with TSR or DLSS
This is the developer-published workaround. TSR is the cleanest neutral test. DLSS is also recommended in the pinned thread, but if DLSS itself freezes during loading on your system, return to TSR.
Restart the game
Do not retest the level in the same session after a major upscaler or Frame Generation change. Patch 1.02 explicitly requires a restart after enabling Frame Generation.
Load the same level once
If it succeeds, keep FSR off for the demo and report the original FSR crash with your exact GPU and driver.
If the settings menu opens
Change only the upscaler first. Do not simultaneously alter the preset, resolution, HDR, and display mode or you will not know which change mattered. Choose TSR, apply, close the game normally, relaunch, and retry the level.
If the game will not reach the menu
The official thread does not publish a Valor Mortis config-file path or tell players to delete local files. We will not invent one.
Use Steam’s normal file verification, update the driver, and retry. If the game still restores the crashing FSR setting and never reaches the menu, report that exact loop through the official Steam feedback forum rather than deleting unknown folders or save data.
If it still crashes with TSR
- Open Windows graphics settings or Nvidia Control Panel and explicitly select the high-performance Nvidia GPU for Valor Mortis.
- If the crash names D3D12/D2DX12 and the game is still selecting integrated graphics, follow the developer’s additional suggestion to disable
Intel(R) AI Boostin Device Manager. Change only that named device and reverse the change if it does not help. - Record the level. Version 1.03 fixed a specific Witch Hunt loading crash, so confirm the current patch if that level alone fails.
- Submit the crash reporter and include GPU model, driver, selected upscaler, Frame Generation state, and level.
