Boss guide · Chapter I: Revival

How to Beat General Lothaire

Lothaire is a two-phase endurance check disguised as a first health bar. Win by turning every attempt into pattern practice, shooting confirmed growth weak points, and refusing to spend phase-two resources in phase one.

The short strategy

Enter with full healing and ammunition. Shoot Lothaire’s visible growths only during safe openings, parry the sword attacks you can already read, dodge the heavy slam/charge and thrown-body pressure, then punish the recovery with a short combo. The first empty health bar is not the end: preserve at least half your healing and some shots for phase two.

Current-demo caution

The boss and combat tuning changed after the 2025 playtest, and patch 1.01 improved performance in this arena. This guide avoids frame counts, exact damage values, and “guaranteed” animation timings that have not been verified against the current public demo.

Before the fight

  1. Rest at the last Lantern and spend Catalyst. A carried balance does not help inside the arena.
  2. Refill healing and pistol ammunition. Lothaire has two health bars; plan for two fights.
  3. Leave stamina after every attack. Cap your normal punish at a short string until you know the next animation.
  4. Fix performance first. Install the latest demo patch and avoid FSR on affected Nvidia cards. A stutter during a telegraph ruins otherwise correct timing.

Phase one: learn without overspending

  1. Start by observing at mid-range

Do not sprint in and unload. Hold a distance where you can see his full upper-body wind-up. Your goal on the first exchange is to identify a committed charge, slam, ranged throw, or readable sword sequence.

  2. Shoot the exposed growths, not the body by default

Hands-on reports consistently identify shootable growths that take extra damage. Use the pistol when the target is visible and Lothaire is locked in recovery. A missed panic shot is ammunition you will not have in phase two.

  3. Parry only the attacks you recognize

The game teaches parry as a posture tool, but “parry everything” is a poor learning plan. Parry familiar sword swings. Dodge the large-body attacks until their contact timing is clear, especially the heavy downward slam and charge.

  4. Punish recovery with two decisions

First decide whether a growth shot is clean. If not, take a short melee punish. Stop while you still have stamina to evade; greed is the main way a correct opening becomes a trade.

  5. Reach zero health with resources intact

Your phase-one benchmark is not speed. It is reaching the transition with healing, pistol shots, and a calm read on his basic range. He gets back up.

Phase two: reset your rhythm

When phase two begins, create space instead of trying to steal transition damage. Treat the first new sequence as reconnaissance.

  • Keep the camera centered on the torso. The boss’s size and first-person view make late peripheral reactions unreliable.
  • Spend saved ammunition on clear weak-point windows. Do not fire through movement just because the health bar is lower.
  • Dodge first, punish second. New or extended patterns are where memorized phase-one parries fail.
  • Heal after displacement, not beside him. Use the distance created by a dodged committed attack.
  • Return to the same loop. Read one sequence, defend it, take one short punish, rebuild stamina.
A good practice target

If you can reach phase two while using no more than half your healing, phase one is solved well enough. Stop experimenting there and spend attempts learning the new timings.

Why attempts keep failing

FailureCorrection
You get hit after landing a comboShorten every punish by one attack and reserve stamina for the exit.
You run out of shots before phase twoFire only at visible growths during a recovery; use melee for ordinary damage.
You miss parries on heavy attacksDodge those attacks until you can name the telegraph. Build parry confidence on the basic sword sequence.
You die while healingHeal after a committed slam/charge carries him away, not from neutral range.
Phase two feels instantly chaoticBack off at the transition and spend the first sequence watching. Do not assume phase-one timing.

If the boss fight stutters or crashes

Official demo patch 1.01 specifically “improved performance” in the General Lothaire fight. Update before practicing. If the game crashes while loading the level on an Nvidia GPU with FSR selected, switch to TSR or DLSS; that is the developer’s published workaround. See the dedicated FSR / Nvidia crash guide for the recovery order.
